Position Objectives

This position is assigned to the McDowell County Parks and Recreation Department. Work hours will routinely be during the evening hours; Monday through Friday and occasional partial weekend days. Physical requirements are standing for long periods of time, lifting up to 50 pounds, walking long distances, working outside in heat and cold, and riding in vehicles. 

 

The person in this position will serve as the primary gym/building supervisor during youth basketball, open gym, and other special functions in the gym and main building.  Overseeing all aspects of sports programs including but not limited to; Youth baseball, Youth Softball, Youth Basketball, Youth Football, Youth Soccer, Youth Swimming, Adult Softball and Adult Basketball.   In addition to managing the existing recreational offerings, this individual will be expected to work closely with the Director in fostering the departmental growth to include trails and greenways, as well as a public shooting range (opening fall 2021), and a campground/day-use area on Lake James (opening fall 2022).  Other specific duties and responsibilities will be discussed with the applicant at the interview process.

Minimum Requirements

Physical Demands and Working Environment: 

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. 

Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently; and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. 

 

Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, perform accounting tasks, operate a computer terminal, do extensive reading, drive a motor vehicle, and be able to inspect work of others. 

Desirable Training and Experience

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in recreation administration, public administration, physical education, or related field.
