Under general guidance from the Program & Outreach Librarian, the Adult & Senior Coordinator is responsible for the planning, organization, and performance of library services to adults and seniors for the McDowell County Public Library. Assists with bookmobile routes and outreach activities.
Major responsibilities include: programming, collection development, management of the Adult Services Department, patron assistance, outreach and bookmobile services, and professional development. Also performs clerical and circulation duties in accordance with established policies. This position is non-exempt under the guidelines of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Programming
- Plans, prepares, and conducts programs for adults and seniors.
- Plans, prepares, and supervises summer reading programs for adults and seniors.
Management of Adult and Senior Services Department
- Maintains adult and senior services records, statistics, and files.
- Recruits and coordinates time and duties of volunteers as needed.
- Stays within budget for materials and for programs.
- Is familiar with complaint procedures; documents and handles initial problems; refers these to the Library Director if necessary.
Circulation
- Computer check-in and check-out of books and other materials.
- Answers telephone promptly while on desk duty.
- Empties book drops daily as assigned.
- Performs library opening and closing procedures when needed.
- Reserves books as requested by patron, and calls patrons when books are available.
- Prepares daily newspapers and periodicals for shelving as assigned.
- Prepares library cards for patrons following library procedures.
- Is familiar with complaint procedures; documents and handles initial problems; refers these to the Library Director if necessary.
- Shelves materials and reads shelves for accuracy as assigned.
- Performs other tasks as assigned.
Patron Assistance
- Greets patrons pleasantly, in person or on the telephone.
- Provides reader’s advisory services for patrons.
- Provides instruction on use of computer catalog.
- Assists patrons using the Internet, copier and fax.
Outreach and Bookmobile
- Drives the library’s bookmobile as part of a weekly rotation.
- Schedules and initiates advertising of adult and senior programs and activities.
- Presents information about adult library services to individuals and groups.
- Develops displays and public relations materials.
- Conducts tours of the library and programs.
Continuing Education
- Attends staff meetings and training sessions as required.
- Attends area, regional, and statewide workshops on request.
- Keeps current with adult and senior materials and services.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Strong written and oral communication and customer relations skills.
- Familiarity with library procedures and materials.
- Knowledge of adult and senior needs, issues and literature.
- Ability to deal tactfully with the public and with co-workers.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to bend, stoop, lift book bags, push loaded book cart.
- Computer knowledge and skills, including Internet and word processing.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
- Public library experience.
- College education desirable, high school required.
- Able to read, write and speak Spanish proficiently.
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
