Duties and Responsibilities

Serves as a member of a two-member ambulance crew that responds to various emergency and non-emergency calls. Considerable independent judgment is employed in assessing the nature and extent of illness or injury, choosing course of action, administering medical treatment and transporting the patient to a medical facility. The employee is exposed to the hazards associated with response, patient care and the dangers of accident sites. Must be in good physical condition as job requires strenuous activity, which includes lifting 200 lbs. and greater, operating in confined areas and physical agility to respond to wilderness accidents. Successful passage of MCDEMS MEDPAT exam is required during pre-employment process. Tact, courtesy and firmness must be exercised in dealing with patients, patient family members and the public. Work is performed in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and techniques. Direct supervision is received from the truck Lieutenant and Shift Supervisor. Evaluation is based on employee’s ability to respond effectively to emergency situations. Employee may supervise lower certifications on an emergency incident.

Minimum Requirements

• Must successfully pass MCDEMS MEDPAT (Physical Agility) Exam during pre-employment process

•Must successfully pass competency exam during pre-employment process

• Geographic knowledge of McDowell County

• Exceptional driving record

• Pre-Employment Drug Screening / Background check

• Valid NC Driver’s License

 

Required Qualifications and Certifications

• NCEMT-I or NCEMT-P Certification *Contingency placed upon EMT-B applicants to obtain EMT-I or EMT-P cert   within a certain period

• National Registry or Critical Care Preferred

• ACLS,PALS, PEEP, ITLS or PHTLS

• BCLS CPR Certification

• Haz-Mat Awareness

• ICS 100-200-700-800
